Zimmermann was the sole athlete representing McMaster and raced in the last event of the day. Two lanes over, McMaster graduate and former Marauder rowing star Tristan Bullard raced his first event of the 2014 indoor season. Saturday’s (March 1) was one of the last races of the indoor rowing season in Ontario. The indoor rowing season is focused on performance in 2000m erg races, where athletes push themselves to the line in preparation for the on-water season in the spring.

Zimmermann’s race started out fast he, Bullard, and two others jostling for the lead. From there, Zimmermann sat in third place, on track to set the McMaster record for the 2014 season. Halfway through, the pace picked up, and Zimmermann responded to maintain his position in the top three.

But with 250m left to go, he made a push to catch the athlete holding second, Mick Malowany, of ROWONTARIO. Zimmermann managed to make up the eight metre difference and passed Malowany on the line to claim silver for McMaster.

He pulled a one second personal best time of 6:12.8 for the 2000m race, while Tristan crossed the line in fourth, for a seasonal personal best time of 6:30.7.

The heavyweight men’s open division had 11 entries from the top athletes in the province. McMaster University, Ridley College, Don’s Rowing Club, Sir Winston Churchill, Brock University, and the ROWONTARIO teams were all represented.

The event also featured many packed high school races in the morning.

With this race done, the last one of the indoor season is the McMaster 2×4 Challenge on March 22, held in the atrium of the McMaster Student Centre. This is an extremely exciting event for athletes and spectators. It is an 8000m four-man team relay event where each athlete takes turns pulling on the erg until they’re tired, and switch to the next team member. The event is open to all athletes and schools, with categories for high school, university, and club events.
