Ancaster Avalanche fell a goal short of tying the Thorold Blackhawks, and sending their best-of-seven Golden Horseshoe Junior B Conference quarter-final match into overtime Tuesday (March 4) at the Chedoke Twin Pad Arena.
With 23 seconds left to play, the Avalanche lost control of the puck deep in the Blackhawks end of the rink, which allowed Matt Pizzo to feed a long pass to Kyle Tanev at the Ancaster blueline.
From there, Tanev had a clear shot into the empty net to clinch a 3-1 victory for the Blackhawks.
The series returns Thorold Thursday night (March 6) where the two clubs will meet for the fifth and possibly deciding game. Thorold leads three games to one. A sixth game if necessary will be played Saturday night in the Morgan Firestone Arena at 7:30 p.m.
Harrison Domagala assisted by Eric Eustace put the Avalanche on the scoreboard first at 3:05 of the opening period. Zach McQuade and Owen Sobchak with first and second period powerplay goals put the Blackhawks out in front. Pizzo set up both the game-winning goal and the empty net goal for Thorold.
