Goaltender Devan Dubnyk made 38 saves in his Hamilton debut, but his teammates couldn’t match his defensive efforts with an equally strong offensive output, resulting in a 2-1 American Hockey League loss to the Oklahoma City Barons (27-24-1-7) on Friday night (March 7). The Bulldogs fired only 24 shots on Barons netminder Richard Bachman.

Dubnyk was acquired by the parent National Hockey League Montreal Canadiens from the Nashville Predators during Wednesday’s trade deadline and assigned to the Bulldogs.

The defeat left Hamilton with a 25-26-1-4 (wins-losses-overtime losses-shootout losses) record, good for fourth place in the North Division, but one point out of last place. The Barons sit in third place in the West Division with a record of 27-24-1-7.

Nathan Beaulieu’s fifth goal of the season gave Hamilton an early lead before the midway mark of the first period. But less than four minutes later Mark Arcobello intercepted Beaulieu’s clearing attempt and picked the top right corner of the net to tie the game.

That stalemate lasted until 6:49 of the second period when Arcobello scored again, this time on a powerplay, for the game winner and his ninth of the season.

The ‘Dogs mustered seven shots on goal in the third period and pulled Dubnyk late for an extra attacker, but they couldn’t put another one past Bachman to tie the game.

Hamilton went 0-for-6 on the power play, while Oklahoma City went 1-for-6.

Hamilton’s next game is scheduled for Saturday (March 8) when the ‘Dogs welcome the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins (AHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins) at FirstOntario Centre at 7 p.m.
