Hamilton forward Christian Thomas opened the scoring late in the first period, but the Lake Erie Monsters replied with four unanswered goals to top the Bulldogs, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon (March 9) at FirstOntario Centre.

Thomas fired a one-time slap shot past Monsters’ goalie Calvin Pickard with 4:05 to go in the first period.

Hamilton had an opportunity to go up two goals when the Bulldogs were awarded a penalty shot after a Lake Erie player flicked a broken stick into the middle of a Hamilton offensive opportunity with about six minutes remaining in the second period. But Sven Andrighetto was stopped by goalie Calvin Pickard on the attempt.

Just over two minutes later, Monsters forward David van der Gulik tied the game 1-1 on the power play, his first of two goals on the night. His second came with 49 seconds to go in the period and gave the visitors a 2-1.

Matt Hunwick made it 3-1 on the power play 9:11 into the third period. Van der Gulik earned an assist for a three-point night.

Michael Schumacher completed the scoring at 13:45 of the third period.

Devan Dubnyk made 21 saves on 25 shots in the Bulldogs net while Pickard stopped 24 of 25 shots.

Hamilton went 0-for-4 on the power play, while Lake Erie went 2-for-6.

Hamilton’s next game is Friday, March 14 when the ‘Dogs will visit the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins. The Bulldogs are back at FirstOntario Centre on Wednesday, March 19 when the Abbotsford Heat are in town for a 7:30 p.m. game.
