Real McCoys await opponent for league title series

As the host team for this year’s national championship in senior hockey, the Dundas Real McCoys receive a free pass to the Allan Cup Tournament in April. But the McCoys want to prove they’re the real deal and took that first step by sweeping the Stoney Creek Generals in their best-of-seven Allan Cup Hockey semi-final series.

Sunday’s (March 9) 9-5 win over the first-year Generals sends Dundas into the league final against either Brantford Blast or Whitby Dunlops. Brantford leads that best-of-seven affair 3-2 with game six set for Friday (March 14) in Brantford. A seventh game, if necessary, will be played in Whitby on Sunday (March 16).

“The Generals deserve a lot of credit. They have a good hockey club and to make the playoffs in their first year of operation is a real success story in a league as tough as ours,” said Real McCoys president and general manager Don Robertson.

“I think the difference between the two teams was our depth, and ability to roll four lines and six defencemen in every game. We seemed to get scoring from everywhere. We used our three goalies, and every player who was available, and wasn’t injured.

“The final series will be a good one. The other two teams will have to sort out who is going to play us for the Cup. We should have everyone ready to go, other than a couple of suspensions, and whether (Matthew) Barnaby will be healthy enough to play. It will be a great tune-up for the Allan Cup Tournament.”

Greg Stewart on a powerplay and Stoney Creek’s Jake Guindon traded goals 12 minutes into the first period of Sunday’s game. However, from that point on it was all Dundas as Cam Watson and Ryan Christie scored twice each. Watson scored once on a powerplay. Justin Davis scored once and set up two more goals while Kevin Bolibruck, Jay McKee, and Adam Deleeuw added singles.

Nick Smith, Jordan Foreman, and Darryl Smith set up three scoring plays apiece. Scott Mifsud assisted on two more.

With Dundas assured a bye into the national championship, the loser of the league final will also earned a berth into the tournament.

Ticket packages for the 11-game Allan Cup Tournament, April 14-19, are available for $200 each. They can be purchased at the JL Grightmire Arena box office on game nights in Dundas and at Com/Choice Realty, 179 King Street West in Dundas, or on-line at www.realmccoys.ca
