Third period collapse sends ’Dogs home with a loss


bulldogsThree unanswered third-period goals by the Toronto lifted the Marlies to 4-1 American Hockey League win over the visiting Hamilton Bulldogs on Sunday (March 16) at Ricoh Coliseum.

Playing their third game in as many night, the Bulldogs opened the scoring in the first period when Justin Courtnall scored on goaltender Christopher Gibson. But less than two minutes later, Toronto forward Greg McKegg struck back on the power play to tie the game.

After a scoreless second period, Marlies forward Sam Carrick scored 6:08 into the third period to give Toronto a 2-1 lead. Five minutes later McKegg potted his second goal of the afternoon. Jerry D’Amigo added an empty-net goal with 90 seconds to go to complete the scoring.

Robert Mayer made 21 saves on 24 shots for the Bulldogs. Gibson made 33 saves on 34 shots for the Marlies.

Hamilton went 0-for-2 on the power play, while Toronto went 1-for-2.

Hamilton’s next game is scheduled for Wednesday (March 19), when the ‘Dogs will host the Abbotsford Heat (AHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames) at FirstOntario Centre at 7:30 p.m.
