It was a successful recent weekend for local figure skater Thomas Turner as he returned from the Skate Ontario STARskate championships with not one but two gold medals.

Thomas, who trains at Gateway Ice Centre in Stoney Creek with Coach Amanda Morelli, qualified to compete in two events at the provincial finals by winning double gold in the Western Ontario section championships in February. In this competition, he secured gold in the Pairs event with his sister, Brooke, and two hours later took the gold in the Senior Bronze men category.

Having achieved double gold in the Western section, Thomas turned his sights to achieving the same feat at the provincial finals.

The Senior Bronze Men’s event took place on Saturday morning (March 22) and after skating first Thomas had to wait until the end of the flight to learn his fate. It was worth the wait, as he achieved the highest score and won the gold medal and title of provincial champion.

With goal in sight, Thomas had to wait until the next morning to compete in the Pair event with Brooke. A fantastic skate achieving a new personal best score secured the gold medal for the sibling duo and ensured that Thomas was able to fulfill his goal of achieving double provincial gold.

The Skate Ontario Championships signifies the end of a very successful competitive season for Thomas and Brooke. They will showcase their gold medal winning performances at the Gateway Ice Centre’s End of Season Show on Sunday (March 30) between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
