Blast take lead in Allan Cup series

ACH logoThe 2014 John Ross Robertson Cup road show continued Friday night (March 28) in the JL Grightmire Arena as the Brantford Blast jumped into an early lead en route to an 8-4 victory over the Dundas Real McCoys in game three of the best-of-seven final.

The action resumes Sunday in the Brantford Civic Centre at 2 p.m. Game five will be played next Friday (April 4) in Dundas at 7:30 p.m. The home team has yet to win a game in the series with Brantford in front 2-1.

Like the two preceding games, the respective team’s snipers had a field day as Chris Levelle, Mark Taylor and Chad Spurr scored twice each. So effective were the Brantford shooters that they chased starting goaltender Daren Machesney from the game after 13 minutes of play. His replacement, Mike Mole, did not fare much better.

The McCoys did not appear to be into the game at the start, but as the contest wore on Dundas played its opponents tougher. The play of the game for the McCoys came with 3:11 left in the third period when Brantford’s Cam Sault stole the puck at centre ice, raced in on Mole, only to be stoned by the Dundas netminder.

Brandon Dietrich and Jamie Williams completed the scoring for the Blast. Chris Rebernik, Mike Ruberto, Joel Prpic, Mike Burgoyne, Jon Jankus, and Sault assisted on two goals apiece for Brantford.

Nick Smith and Ryan Christie paced the McCoys with a goal and assist each with Jason Ward and Dave Bowman adding single goals. Jeff White set up three of the Dundas goals. As lopsided as the game appeared it was much closer in terms of territorial advantage and shots on goal. Brantford outshot Dundas 36-35. Dundas picked up two of the game’s three powerplay goals.
