The Binbrook Minor Yankees, sponsored by Breakaway Sports, won the local 2014 Minor Ball Cal Ripken Baseball Championship this past Saturday (Aug 23).
The Yankees defeated the Binbrook Minor Royals in the finale of the day-long city championship at Edwards Memorial Park in Binbrook. Teams from Binbrook and the East Hamilton / Stoney Creek leagues participated in the tournament.
The final day also featured Grand Slam and Golden Glove competitions. Jason Turple (East Hamilton Marlins) and Ella Kennedy (Binbrook Minor Cardinals) had the furthest hits; while Colson Swinarchin (Binbrook Minor Royals) and Autumn St. Pierre (East Hamilton Marlins) had the golden gloves.
The previous weekend, the Cardinals were crowned Binbrook Rookie Ball winners for the second year in a row.
Cal Ripken Baseball (affiliated with Babe Ruth League Inc.) is the fastest growing youth baseball program in North America for players ages 4-12 in several different divisions. The Hamilton area Cal Ripken Baseball leagues are part of the Western New York division.
More than 300 youths played this past season in T-Ball, Rookie, Minor and Major divisions in Binbrook (http://www.binbrookbaseball.ca/) and East Hamilton / Stoney Creek (http://battlefieldbaseball.baberuthonline.com/).
For 2014, East Hamilton featured a Select T-Ball team (to age 9) that went to the quarter finals at the Ancaster World T-Ball tournament, while Binbrook developed a Minor Ball (Mosquito) SOBA team that participated in tournaments and the Ontario All-Star Select loop.
