Vandermade picks up Maple Leaf junior golf tour win

BADEN – Brantford’s Nicole Vandermade cruised to a five stroke win to capture the Girls Division of the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour. The 16-year-old player from the Brantford Golf Club opened with a 77 on the par-70, 4,877 yard course at the Foxwood Golf Club but rebounded with a 71 in the final round.

Nicole Vandermade, 16, of Brantford, winner of the MJT at Foxwood Girls Division Title, with Mike Skimson, CPGA and MJT Assistant Tournament Director.

“I didn’t get greedy and try to use a driver every hole,” stated Vandermade. “I mostly hit irons or woods off the tee which set up well for my approach shots. This is my first MJT event and I am very pleased with the result.”

The two-day tournament, which features some of Canada’s most promising players, was also used to qualify at least two players to join Maple Leaf Team Canada in Mexico, where they will defend their 2005 title in the fifth International Junior Golf Team Invitational in Cuernavaca this August. The rest of the eight-player squad is being selected from other qualifiers across the country.

First round leaders in each of the four divisions held on to their leads to all claim their respective victories in tough, windy conditions. Both Mike McKenzie, 18 of Cambridge and Josh Bamberger, 16, of Waterloo, tied for the low overall tournament score (146) and won the Boys 17 and Boys 14-16 divisions respectively.

Mike McKenzie, 18, who is off to the University in South Carolina this fall on a golf scholarship, fired rounds of 73-73 to win his division by seven strokes.

“I kept a positive attitude after terrible starts both days,” said McKenzie. “It was extremely windy and wasn’t very easy to go low. I grinded it out. Anytime you win it feels great – this win gives me confidence going into the All-Ontario High School Championships.”

Brent McKenzie, 14, of Cambridge playing out of the Galt Country Club, placed third in the 14-16 group.

Second place in the Boys 13 division went to Brad Burgess, 13, of Caistor Center and Southbrook Golf Club, (83-82=165). Gajan Sivabalasingham, 12, of Markham, won the division.

The Boys 13 divisional winner in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition was Jay Doherty, of Cambridge.

The tour resumes on July 10-11 at Hidden Lake Golf Club in Burlington. This event will also serve as a qualifier for the CAN-USA Junior Team Matches at ASU Karsten Golf Club in Tempe, Arizona, USA, this December.
