Lynden’s Dembe takes opening match at Wheelchair Tennis Open

Lynden’s Joel Dembe won his opening match, 7-5, 6-3 over Dylan Levine of the United States at the Canadian Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships on Thursday.

But in the B flight, Ancaster’s Al Nicolls wasn’t as fortunate. He dropped his opening round game to Oci Comaniciu of North York, 6-0,6-0.

Tournament play, which features 41 competitors including some of the world’s best, continues today at the Hamilton Tennis Club, on Duke Street in Hamilton. The tournament concludes on Sunday (June 25).

In other play, Gary Luker of Stoney Creek lost to Thornhill’s Flavio Pagliero, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in second round play and in quarter-final action in the quad division, Adrian Dielman of Ancaster lost 6-1, 6-2 to David Jordan of the U.S.
