Consolation wheelchair tennis crown fits Ancaster’s Dieleman

For Adrian Dieleman, one good turn deserves another. After the Ancaster player defeated fellow Canadian Bert Blokker 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 to claim the Quad Open consolation title at the 2006 Canadian Wheelchair Championships at the Hamilton Tennis Club, Dieleman partnered with his opponent in the Quad doubles division on Friday (June 23).

It was a good pairing as the twosome advanced to the finals by eliminating Ken Bartel of Vancouver and Sarah Hunter of White Rock, B.C., 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4. Blokker also eliminated Bartel in the Quad singles semifinals.

Dieleman and Blokker will meet Americans Bryan Barten and David Jordan in the final. The Barten-Jordan duo advanced after beating American Davis Harrison and Guelph’s Cindy McLean, 6-0, 6-1.

In the Men’s wheelchair B division, Stoney Creek’s Gary Luker stayed in the hunt with a third round win over Angelina Saunders of Pickering, Ont., 6-0, 6-1.

But Joel Dembe was less fortunate in the Men’s Wheelchair Open Doubles division. The Lynden competitor and partner Australian Simon Jasprizza were eliminated in a quarter final match by Trois Rivieres’ Yan Mathiew and Phil Rowe of Langley, B.C., 6-3, 6-1.

Fonthill’s Natache Southwell was a quarterfinal victim in the Junior Wheelchair Open flight. She lost 6-0, 6-0 to Robert Cloutier of Ottawa.

The championships, which feature some of the world’s top ranked wheelchair players concludes on Sunday (June 25).
