Rains stops play at Wimbledon, Niagara’s Dancevic match suspended

It has rained on Frank Dancevic’s parade. The Niagara Falls resident’s opening day match at Wimbledon was suspended because of rain with the score tied 5-5 in the first set on Monday (June 26).

Dancevic advanced to the men’s main draw with a 7-5, 7-6 (2), 6-4 win over Noak Okun of Israel in a qualifying match Thursday. The Czech Republic’s Stepanek is ranked No. 14 in the world while Dancevic stands at 125.

He was seeded sixth in the qualifying draw and earlier defeated Italian Andrea Stoppini 6-1, 6-1 and South African Wesley Whitehouse 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

Dancevic is the lone Canadian in the main draw of singles play at Wimbledon after Frederic Niemeyer of Magog, Que., lost in the first round of men’s qualifying and Aleksandra Wozniak, of Blainville, Que., and Stephanie Dubois, of Laval, Que., lost in the first round of women’s qualifying.
