Hamilton’s Ross sits one stroke back of Champion of Champions leader

Baddeck, N.S – Andrew Ross of Dundas is one stroke off the lead after an opening round 71 Tuesday (June 27) at the Canadian Club Champions Championship.

The Hamilton Golf and Country Club champion and two others – Phil Patterson of Prescott Golf Club in Prescott (Ontario) and Peter Campbell of host club Bell Bay Golf Club – trail Michel Landry of Moncton, title holder at Club de Golf Pokemouche in Caraquet (New Brunswick).

In all, 28 players are within six shots Landry.

To qualify for the Canadian Club Champions Championship, a player must have won either his club’s stroke or match play championship. This championship is conducted at stroke play over 72 holes and after 54 holes the field is cut to the lowest 70 scores and ties.

Last year’s champion, Victor Ciesielski, playing out of the Galt Country Club in Cambridge, found himself in familiar surroundings after Day One. He fought his way around the 6,520-yard, par 72 course, finishing with an 80 and 10 shots back of the lead.

Last year he was 13 strokes in arrears.

“It doesn’t really mean much,” said Ciesielski. “I learned last year that a 13 shot lead can disappear pretty quickly. A few good holes back-to-back will put you right back in it … that’s golf.”

This year’s champion of champions could find himself playing in September’s Canadian Open. The winner earns an exemption to the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship. That tournament has exemptions for the winner and the runner up into the Canadian Open.

The Hamilton Golf and Country Club will host the Canadian Open on September 4-10. The Canadian Amateur goes August 11-18 at the Mississaugua Golf and Country Club.

The Champions championship continues through to Friday’s final round.
