A “senior” voice will welcome competitors to this year’s Ontario Senior Games, set for August 14-16 in Hamilton. Veteran sports reporter and CH sports anchor Ken Welch will be the master of ceremonies to kick start the 16-event Games. Opening ceremonies will take place at McMaster University, where competitors will be housed for the weekend.
Welch, 52, has been with CHtv since 1985.
The Senior Games will feature competitions in darts, men’s and women’s golf, horseshoes, lawn and carpet bowling, bocce, tennis, 5-pin bowling, floor shuffleboard, 3k prediction walk, swimming, bid euchre, cribbage, contact bridge, and basketball shoot (as a demonstration event).
As many as 1,500 participants aged 55-plus are expected to join in the summer games.
Forty districts throughout Ontario are represented at the Games and participants are chosen through regional qualifications. District winners are offered the opportunity to compete against their provincial counterparts to determine provincial champions.
Hamilton last hosted the Senior Games in 1992.
