Close-but-no-cigar for Team Canada at the Commonwealth Tenpin


It was another day of close-but-no-cigar for Team Canada at the third Commonwealth Tenpin Championships.

Canada’s men’s doubles team of George Lambert IV of Hamilton and Jonathan Simoneau of Montreal finished fifth while in the women’s division, Jennifer Willis-Park of Nanaimo, B.C., and Caroline Lagrange of Notre Dame des Pins, P.Q., finished in fourth place in Melbourne, Australia.

Malaysia won the men’s gold medal with Australia taking silver and New Zealand and England tied for bronze. On the women’s side gold went to England, silver to Malta, and bronze to Australia. The men’s missed a medal chance by 35 pins and the women were 44 pins shy of reaching the podium.

In the men’s singles event, Lambert missed the bronze medal by one pin and Willis-Park missed the women’s singles bronze by 49 pins. Lagrange won the silver medal in the women’s singles event.

Competition concludes on July 9. Canada is one of 17 countries competing. Australia, Bahamas, Brunei Darussalam, England, Gibraltar, Guernsey, India, Jersey, Malaysia, Malta, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Wales Singapore and Scotland are competing. The newly formed Pakistan Tenpin Federation is also competing for the first time.

Lucien Casagrande of Winnipeg, Manitoba is coaching the Canadian team. Play continues tomorrow with the Mixed Doubles event.
