Round one of Women’s Amateur taken by Hamilton’s Sholer

St. Catharines – Ashley Sholer of Hamilton has the early lead as the Investors Group Women’s Amateur Championship heads into its second round of play today. The 20-year-old Sholer holds a one stroke lead after her opening round of 71, a one-under par effort on the St. Catharines Golf & Country Club.

Sholer put together six pars and two birdies on holes 16 and 17 to start her day on the back nine. On the front end, she birdied the second hole, a par 4 measuring 385 yards.
Defending champion Lindsay Knowlton, 24, of Toronto, was tied for second place with an even par round 72 to match London native Maggie Steciuk, 23.

Five time winner Mary Ann Lapointe of Georgetown is just two strokes off the pace along side the 2000 and 2002 champion Laura Matthews of Stillwater and Kingston’s Paige Esford.
No doubt the sentimental favourite is 72-year-old Marlene Streit who took this championship a record 11 times. The Unionville native is in a tie for 43rd, eight strokes off the pace.

Round two of the 91st Women’s Amateur Championship will trim the field to 54 and ties playing the third round for the championship.
