Charging Rhinos chase Lady Avalanche in USL W-League Soccer

ROCHESTER – Four goals in a span of 28 minutes in the second half buried the Hamilton Avalanche on Saturday. The W-League’s fifth place Rochester Rhinos (4-5-0, 12 points) handed the third place Avalanche (5-5-1, 16 points) a 5-0 drubbing before 1,326 spectators in Rochester’s final home game of the 2006 women’s soccer league’s regular season.

Mavis Danso lead the team with a goal and two assists.
Forward Belinda Kanda put the Rhinos on the board in the fifth minute, receiving a pass from Danso and hitting a hard shot in the air to beat diving Lady Avalanche goalkeeper Stacey VanBoxmeer.

The Rhinos continued to dominate offensively, taking five first half corner kicks, but converting none.

The floodgates opened in the second half at the 60th minute when defender Samantha Hawn scored her first goal of the season, heading in a high cross from Danso. A low cross by Elizabeth Masterson led to a Danso goal in the 68th minute of play. Mavis crashed the net to cover the far post and complete the goal, her eighth of the season. Danso leads the Rhinos with 8 goals and 19 points on the season.

Jessica Bartock of St. Bonaventure University came off the bench to score her first goal of the season in the 86th minute. Her shot beat VanBoxmeer after defender Jacquie Lacek found Bartock with a header off of a cross in front of the net for the assist.

The final goal came two minutes later from Masterson, also her first of the season. Her unassisted goal found the net on a hard shot following a ricocheting shot off the crossbar.

The Rhinos will hit the road to face Hamilton on Saturday, July 15 in the second and final meeting between the teams this season.
