Women Mountaineers pick up OCAA playoff ticket with weekend soccer shutouts

A pair of shutout victories have guaranteed the Mohawk Mountaineers a playoff berth in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association women’s soccer.

A 3-0 blanking of the Sarnia Lambton Lions on Sunday, followed a 5-0 shutout of the Windsor St. Clair Saints on Friday.

The shutouts were goalkeeper Lisa Pozeg’s (Stoney Creek) third in a row and stretched Mohawks unbeaten streak to four games.

The Mountaineers, now 4-2-1 advance to meet a still to be determined East Region team in a crossover playoff game. The winner of that game will move on to the OCAA championship at Oakville’s Sheridan College on Oct. 27-28.

The Mountaineers complete the regular season schedule on Wednesday against the first place 6-0-1 Humber Hawks at Mohawk Sports Park at 4:30.

On Sunday, the Mountaineers, who have scored 12 goals in their past three games, got counters from Amanda Edmonds (Burlington), Amanda Celeste (Hamilton), and Nicole Broham (Hamilton).

Celeste also had three goals in Friday’s 5-0 win over Windsor. Completing the scoring were Kristi Cossar (Waterford) and Ali Bettger (Burlington).

Celeste and Cossar each have five goals on the season.
Mohawk is in fourth place with 13 points, two back of Sheridan.
