Winning two of three games in a pre-season basketball tournament has started Mohawk Mountaineers men’s basketball team off on a winning note.
After losing the opening game, 103-97 to Quebec’s College Ste. Foy, Mohawk rebounded with wins over Algonquin Thunder (107-98) and La Cite of Ottawa (101-72) , the tournament hosts.
Panyin Kyei led Mohawk with 23 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists against Ste. Foy. Rookie Zivojin Tolmac (Hamilton Glendale) had 20 points and Nick Gaspic 19.
In the second game, Kyei had 27 points, Igor Trbojevic scored 26, while Gaspic and Dave Almas each chipped in 10.
In their final game, Trbojevic had 23 points, Tolmac had 18, Kyei 17, Almas 15 and Gaspic 13.
The men open Ontario Colleges Athletic Association regular season play on Oct. 27 at home, part of a cage doubleheader. Algoma University College of Sault Ste. Marie Thunderbirds visit the Fennell Gym for an 8 p.m. game. The women play at 6 p.m.
