Mohawk takes men’s, women’s volleyball tournaments

Mohawk Mountaineers are serving doubles… in volleyball wins, that is. Tournament titles by the men’s and women’s teams on the weekend mark the second time in pre-season play that Mohawk has been a double winner this year.

Playing at the Killer Instinct Tournament, the men were perfect, winning every game. Belleville Loyalist, Peterborough Fleming, Barrie Georgian, and Peterborough Trent were pool play victims in two-game sweeps before Sudbury Cambrian was ousted 2-0 in the semifinals.

Host Oshawa Durham fared no better in the championship tilt. The Mountaineers also picked up individual player honours with Matt Schnarr’s selection as tournament most valuable player and Jasmin Cull and Kevin Watson named to the allstar team.

The men will try for three straight at the Humber Cup Invitational in Etobicoke, Nov. 3-4.

The women were almost as perfect in dominating the Paw Power Invitational at Oakville’s Sheridan College. The Mountaineers opened with a draw against Oshawa Durham and then swept everyone else. Sudbury Cambrian, Sudbury Boreal, and Ottawa La Cite were 2-0 trophies in pool play. In the quarter finals, Sheridan fell 2-0, North Bay Nipissing suffered the same fate in the semis, and Toronto Humber was blanked in the championship finale.

Mohawk’s Stacey Dafore was chosen tourney MVP.

The women open regular season play on Saturday at home – the Fennell Campus Gym – at noon against Sault College.
