Mohawk cagers lets exhibition game slip through their hands

The Sting stung. And the Mohawk Mountaineers were the stingees.

The Seneca Sting, trailing by 12 points in the second half, came to life and went on to defeat the Mountaineers 78-68 in an Ontario College Athletic Association exhibition men’s basketball contest at Mohawk’s Fennell Gym on Saturday night.

Mohawk went into the second half looking at a seven-point deficit but rallied to jump ahead by a dozen points in a six minute burst. The Mountaineers rally, however, fueled the Sting, who charged back to regain the lead.

Nick Gaspic (Hamilton) had 21 points for Mohawk. Igor Trbojevic (Hamilton) scored 17, while Matt Bruyn (Brantford) and Marko Gacic (Hamilton) contributed 11 apiece.

“We played well defensively, said Mountaineers’ head coach Brian Jonker. “There were two large dry spells offensively that ultimately cost us the game. We are looking forward to playing a meaningful (league) game at home (Friday, Feb. 2).”

The 4-6 Mountaineers play the 2-6 Redeemer Royals from Ancaster at 8 p.m. in the West Division matchup.

The game will be preceded by the Mohawk-Redeemer women’s game at 6 p.m. Mohawk is 2-6 and Redeemer is 0-6.
