McKenzie scores second Maple Leaf golf win

Hamilton and area golfers gave a strong showing at the second Ontario stop of Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) at Cambridge Golf Club on May 26-27.

The tournament was a double qualifier for spots on MJT Team Canada which will compete at the Scotland Kingdom of Fife Junior Team Matches in the U.K., and on MJT Team Canada going to the International Junior Golf Invitational in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Both events are set for this August.

Brent McKenzie, 15, of Cambridge, playing out of the Whistle Bear Golf Club, continued his winning ways on the MJT by firing 75-70 (145) to win low overall and the Boys 14-16 division, capturing his second spot in an international competition. McKenzie, who qualified on the MJT earlier in the season for the International Junior Masters in East Aurora, New York, will now also travel to St. Andrews in Scotland with the Canadian team.

Runner-up to McKenzie was Mike Rizetto, 16, of Brantford, who shot 79-74 (153). First round leader Brendan Leonard, 16, of Cambridge, followed up his opening 72 with an 84 to settle for third place at 156.

Bryan Germann, 18, of Kitchener, fired back-to-back rounds of 74 to close at 148 for the tournament for the Boys 17 and up division title.

In the Boys 13 and under division, 13-year-old Christian Jeffery of Burlington placed fourth with rounds of 89-83 for a 172 score. Winner Robert Bennett, 12, of Cambridge, carded 81-84 (165). Matthew Speyer, 13, of Cambridge tied for second with 83-85-168.

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Sean Carlino, 13, of Hamilton, Brantford’s Mike Rizetto, 16, and Ben Deignan, 18, of Cambridge. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners included Jordan Ryan, 15, of Brantford.

The MJT Ontario schedule continues June 9-10 at Osprey Valley Golf Club near Orangeville. This tournament is also a qualifier for spots in the Texas Junior Masters at Colovista Country Club in Bastrop, TX, this July.
