Van Es misses out on trip to NASCAR’s victory lane

Stoney Creek native Ron Van Es settled for 16th place on Sunday when the NASCAR Canadian Tire series moved to Mosport International Speedway at Bowmanville. While Van Es and his Chevrolet pocketed $1,070 for their performance, the spotlight went to Andrew Ranger.

The Roxton Pond, Que., native survived not one, but two, stock car rookie mistakes to collect his first win in NASCAR at the Dickies 200.

As the pole sitter, he jumped the start of the race and was penalized with a pass-through penalty costing him nearly 10 positions. Then, on a lap 22 pit stop he seemingly stopped too close to the wall giving the jackman the difficult task of lifting the right side of the car.

Ranger took the lead for good on lap 43 of the race but it was a lead he had to wrestle away from second-place finisher J.R. Fitzpatrick. After flirting with a nearly three second lead, Ranger beat Fitzgerald to the line by 1.694 seconds.

Ranger had not spent a great deal of time behind the wheel of a stock car, but was able to earn his first win in just his second NASCAR event. A year ago he finished 10th in the CHAMP Car final point standings. He made the full-time switch to the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series last off season.

Ron Beauchamp finished third followed. He was followed by Peter Gibbons and D.J. Kennington in fourth and fifth, respectively.

In addition to Van Es, other local drivers who competed in the race included: Hamilton native Don Thomson Jr., who finished 24th after motor problems forced him to the pits after 30 laps. He started at pole position five and earned $800. Grimsby’s Jeff Lapcevich came home in seventh place after staring at PP 12 and picked up $1,600. Jim Lapcevich of Caistor Centre was $925 richer because of his 22nd place showing; and Lynden’s Kenny Forth was 29th and took home $800.

The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Sirius Satellite Radio is back on the track next for a July 1 Canada Day race at Barrie (Ontario) Speedway.
