Grimsby runner selected for Canada’s World Youth meet team

Grimsby’s Esther Vermeer has been named to Canada’s team which will compete in the 5th World Youth Championships.

Vermeer, a member of the Niagara Olympic Club and coached by Stuart Galloway, will compete in the 800 metre event at the track and field championships

The competitions run from July 11 to 15 in the Czech Republic’s city of Ostrava. It is anticipated the meet will be the largest gathering of world youth athletes ever.
Bruce Pirnie, Athletics Canada Director and Head Coach of Development Programs, believes he has a strong team heading to the Czech Republic and will challenge for a number of medals. “This year’s team is very deep and strong in almost every event area. We’re looking to improve on our 2005 results from Morocco and should have medal contenders in several events.”

Canada is sending a team of 37 athletes and nine coaches and officials.
