Mohawk College celebrates its 40th anniversary and the public is invited to a special Homecoming Weekend this Friday and Saturday (Oct. 12-13).
Friday afternoon the Mountaineers ‘kick off’ the celebration as they entertain the St. Clair Saints in key men’s and women’s Ontario Colleges Athletic Association West Division Soccer. Both games, starting at 4.30 p.m. at Mohawk Sports Park, have significant playoff implications.
Many Mountaineers stars of the past will hit the hardwood at the Fennell Gym Friday night to take on the current crop of Mohawk stars in an Alumni-Varsity doubleheader.
The OCAA’s all time leading scorer, Mohawk and OCAA Hall of Fame member Melinder Coker and recent Mohawk Hall of Fame Inductee Tracy Hopkins (Hynd) will head up a list of familiar faces on the alumni side, which will be coached by Earl Begg, himself a Mohawk and OCAA Hall of Famer. The game will get under way at 6 pm.
The men’s game will follow at 8 p.m. and the Alumni squad will include Mohawk Hall of Fame members Sergio Bolzon and Jim Gaunt, plus former All-Canadian Perry Kazulak. The team will be coached by Mohawk and OCAA Hall of Famer Wes Hicks.
Saturday will see an array of varsity activities. The women’s fastball team will face Durham Lords at 11 a.m. at Mohawk Sports Park. The reigning OCAA Champion Mountaineer rugby team will put its five game win streak on the line against Fleming College of Peterborough at 1 p.m. at Mohawk Sports Park. Mohawk’s two soccer teams do back to back battle with Lambton College Lions at Hillfield Strathallan, which is located next to the Fennell Campus. The women will play at 1 p.m. and the men at 3 p.m.
