Jacob Ohanian, 16, of Winona, birdied two holes down the stretch to record scores of 38-73 (111) and took the Boys 14 -16 Division title in the kickoff of the Maple Leaf Junior Tour (MJT) Ontario Series held at Cambridge Golf Club in Cambridge on May 3 and 4.
“Coming down the stretch I was expecting somebody to go low, so I knew I had to finish strong, ” said Ohanian, who plays out of Hamilton’s Glendale Golf and Country Club and is looking forward to be heading to New York next month for the 56th East Aurora International Junior Masters (EAIJM) at East Aurora Golf Club in New York. “Earning this exemption was my goal for the tournament. It’s a great way to start my season, knowing I will be playing in an event like the EAIJM.”
Tied for second place behind Ohanian at 112 were Zachary Kempra, 16, of Brantford (37-75), and Cambridge’s Brendan Leonard, 16 (36-76).
Heavy rain shortened play to 27 holes for most competitors in the opening tournament of the MJT Ontario series. Golfers from Ontario, New Brunswick and New York competed in the tournament.
Competing in the same age division with Ohanian, Hamilton’s Sean Carlino, 14, also a Glendale member, placed eighth with a total score of 117. Oakville’s Joshua Richard-Monro, 15, had a 134 count for 24th spot.
In the Boys 17 and Up division, York’s Derek Brenzil, 17, playing out of Southbrook Golf and Country Club, finished in fourth place with a 122 count, 15 strokes back of the winner.
