Major League Baseball takes look at three local pitchers

Three local diamonds-in-the-ruff have caught the eye of Major League Baseball.

Ancaster’s Brad Furdal, Burlington’s Jordan Meaker, and Smithville’s Benson Merritt were selected in the second day of MLB’s First Year Player Draft. In total, 30 Canadians were selected on day two while one player, Brett Lawrie of Langley, B.C., was selected 16th overall by the Milwaukee Brewers.

Furdal, chosen by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, went in the 11th round. The right-handed pitcher was the 323rd overall choice.

The Arizona Diamondbacks were impressed by Meaker, also a right-handed pitcher. He went in the 20th round and was the 618th overall pick.

Completing the run of right-handed hurlers, Merritt was a 42nd round selection, 259th overall, by the Cincinnati Reds.
