Niagara Lightning host U20 Rugby Canada Super League final

Lightning, the Under 20 Eastern Champions will host Vancouver Wave, this Sunday August 10 at Crusader Park in Oakville for the Rugby Canada Super League (RCSL) Under 20 National Title. This will be the first time in the 11 years of the RCSL that a final will be played in Ontario.

Several players recently returned from Canada’s IRB u20 duties in Europe will be competing and many other younger ones vying for a shot at making next year’s Canada u20 team will be on hand.  This is an exciting opportunity to see some of the best rising talent the country has to offer.

The Lightning, selected from the top players aged under 20 in the Golden Horseshoe area, went through their playoff rounds unbeaten, with the most significant victory being that over the Rock Juniors in Newfoundland in June. Few visitors win a rugby game in St. Johns.

However, Pat Fleck, head coach of the Vancouver Wave is coming East with a strong balance side that is also unbeaten in their run-up to this final. Fleck commented: “Following a poor season in 2007, the Vancouver Wave U20 team is getting the taste of success this season with a record of 5 wins and no losses and definitely shows they are a team looking to prove something. There are nine returning players from last year’s team, including captain and fly-half Charlie Jones.  Our senior players have all had strong years and have definitely lead by example.  This, combined with a very talented group of new athletes has definitely been the reason for our success.  Although there have been a number of brilliant individual performances this season, it is impossible to select any one player to watch amongst a team this balanced. “

Lightning head coach Gary MacDonald will announce his 22-man squad on Wednesday after their practice at Saltfleet HS, drawing from players in the Oakville, Stoney Creek, Waterloo, Brantford, Burlington, Niagara and London rugby clubs. Several players have had games playing with the Thunder, in the senior RCSL competition this year.

Kick-off will be at 2:00 pm on Sunday at the Oakville Crusaders field on 9th line in Oakville.
