Niagara Falls native John Surla has been named a Pioneer Petroleum’s Ontario University Athletics Athlete of the Week.
Surla, a linebacker with the football Western Ontario Mustangs, came up with a key sack late in the fourth quarter as the Mustangs scored a 35-31 come-from-behind win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
Surla also scooped up a timely fumble earlier in the game and applied consistent pressure on the quarterback throughout the contest. His overall excellent pass rushing, two break-ups, and 7.5 tackles, contributed to his consideration for male player’s honours. The second-year linebacker was second on the team in tackles along with his break-up and caused a forced fumble as he helped to limit Ottawa’s running game.
Katie Lugg of the Gee-Gees soccer team was the female player of the week.
