It was a rematch of last year’s Ontario Colleges Athletic Association women’s fastball gold medal game and the reigning champions took home the spoils to open up the new regular season.
The Durham Lords took both ends of a doubleheader from the Mohawk Mountaineers, 9-2 and 7-5 (in an extra inning) on Thursday (Sep. 11) at Mohawk Sports Park.
In the opener, Danielle Smith had three hits and two RBI in support of winning pitcher Karie Neddo. Nicole Todd was tagged with the defeat for the Mountaineers, who got two hits from Ellie Hogg. The Lords scored four times in the fourth inning and never looked back.
The nightcap pitted Smith, the 2007 OCAA most valuable player, against the top pitcher in last year’s championship tournament, Mohawk’s Jenny Koschanow. With the score 4-4 after regulation play, Durham’s Erin Dewey hit a two-run single in the extra inning and then the Lords held off the Mountaineers.
Samantha Tubman led Mohawk with two hits and drove in a pair of runs.
