The Hamilton Hurricanes won the Ontario Football Conference’s battle of the bay with a 31-15 victory over the Burlington Braves at Ivor Wynne Stadium. Quarterback Brian Echlin led the ’Canes to Saturday’s win, passing for 308 yards on 19 of 32 attempts. Four of his tosses were converted into touchdowns on his way to Offensive Player of the Week honours.
The Braves scored a 106 yard pass-and-run touchdown from Mike Chase to Mike Wooner on the last play of the game.
In other junior football action, the Ottawa Sooners ventured into St Leonard’s Stade Hebert on Saturday night and came away with their third victory of the young OFC season. Danny Mullins booted a nine-yard field goal with just over two minutes remaining for the 16-13 win over the Cougars.
Veteran linebacker Ryan Perry helped keep the home team close as he accumulated 25 defensive points and Player of the Week honours.
In London the Beefeaters won their first game since September 2007 with a 19-9 victory over the Windsor AKO Fratmen. Robert Varallo sealed the victory late in the fourth quarter with a 35-yard interception return for a TD.
Steve Smith booted three field goals for the Fratmen. The Beefs’ kicker Zack Medeiros was good on four field goals of his own and converted the touchdown for 13 points and the Special Teams Award.
All three games this weekend will be played Saturday night at 7 p.m.
The Windsor AKO Fratmen (1-2) take on the Hamilton Hurricanes (2-1) at Ivor Wynne. The Ottawa Sooners (3-0) host the London Beefeaters (1-2) at Keith Harris Stadium on the Carleton University campus. The Burlington Braves (0-3) will meet the St Leonard Cougars (2-1) at Stade Hebert.
