Football Marauders tame York Lions

McMasterMcMaster University had 666 net offensive yards to cruise past the York Lions 49-8 at York Stadium and improve to 2-1 in the early Ontario University Athletics football season. McMaster running back Jordan Kozina (Brantford) scored three touchdowns on a 17 yard rush and a pair of receptions (14 yards and 20 yards) to pace the Marauders on Saturday (Sept. 19). Kozina would carry the ball 13 times for 108 yards.

York fullback Jacob Appiah (Etobicoke) paced the Lions with 14 carries for 75 yards while Johnny Payton (Dade City, FL) had three receptions for 44 yards.

McMaster quarterback Ryan Fantham (London) completed 11 passes for 191 yards and 2 touchdowns and would rush for a 19 yard score in the first half before being replaced by sophomore, Kyle Quinlan (South Woodsley, ON) late in the second quarter. Quinlan would enjoy a strong performance completing 14 of 18 passes for 203 yards and a touchdown. He would also score on a one yard rush in the third quarter.

York’s lone touchdown would come from a 10-yard pass from Nick Coutu (St. Catharines) to fifth year offensive lineman Matt Davis in the second quarter.

McMaster receiver Kevin D’Hollander (London) hauled in six receptions for 104 yards. Fifth year senior Matt Giordano (Hamilton) had four catches for 71 yards. McMaster M back (the Marauders’ version of a full back), John Hartnett (Hamilton) would score on a seven-yard reception in the first quarter running his touchdown count to two on the season.

The York defense put up some outstanding individual numbers. Stephen Reading (Fenelon Falls, ON) recorded 12 tackles and a forced fumble. Defensive back Andre Clarke (Mississauga) had nine tackles and an interception.

For McMaster, linebacker Scott Caterine (Burlington) had four tackles and a sack. Third year defensive lineman Steve Cecchini (Thorold) along with rookies Anthony Bekasiak (Tecumseh, ON) and Dylan Roesch-Crane (Port Colborne) would all add four tackles.

Next Saturday, McMaster will be host to the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (2-1) at 1 p.m. Stadium. Tickets are available online at by phone at 905-525-9140 x 24464 or in person at the business office in the David Braley Athletic Centre.
