Mohawk Mountaineers came away from the 7th Annual Overkill Fanshawe College Kick-off Volleyball Tourney in London over the weekend with a gold medal in women’s play and a silver in men’s play.
The women’s team went through the weekend dropping only one set in five matches played. That was in the semi final against a non-college team, the Forest City Under 18 “London Ladies”. Mohawk took the best-of-three match 25-17, 23-25, 19-17. Then, in the final, the Mountaineers dispatched the Georgian Grizzlies of Barrie 25-21, 25-20.
Mohawk’s Rachel VanHartingsveldt was named tournament MVP while teammate Allison Feliciano was selected an All-Star. New Mountaineer head coach Sean Pellow gave his charges a mixed review but was pleased with the team’s overall performance.
“We were still a little inconsistent with the new defensive system and new communication expectations,” said Pellow. “We made huge gains throughout the weekend and will continue to move forward. The biggest victory was our ability to fight through tough situations.”
The men downed Seneca 25-20, 25-22 in the semi final, but dropped the final to host Fanshawe Falcons 20-25, 23-25.
Mohawk’s Ian Cameron and Codey Forrest were both named All-Stars.
Co-head coach Matt Schnarr said the team progressed from it’s first match on the weekend to the last.
“We were not so good early in the tourney,” said Schnarr, “but we made leaps and bounds by the end. The players were working as a team and saw where they can be if they continue to work hard.”
