Two huge soccer wins for Mohawk College Thursday (Oct. 8) as they aim for post season action and it’s going down to the wire in each case.
The men’s team downed the Redeemer Royals 3-1 in Ancaster and remained three points ahead of Sheridan in the battle for the coveted second place in the West Region. Yousef Mohammad scored inside the first five minutes of the game for the Mountaineers. Then around the half hour mark, a perfect cross by Michael Vitaterna found Matthew Wiggins, who buried a beautiful header into the corner of the net.
Little did anyone know that would turn out to be the winning goal, because with a little over six minutes remaining, Redeemer got one back from Gerrit VanAndel and the Royals weren’t dead yet. However, a tap-in by Mohawk’s Evin Shemoun, about three minutes later, sealed the deal for the Mountaineers.
Mohawk is now 5-3-3. Sheridan is 5-5 and three points back with a game in hand. The two teams met September 22 in Oakville and the Mountaineers won 4-2 giving them a leg up should a tie-breaker be required. The teams play at Mohawk Sports Park on Wednesday October 14, when the Bruins will try to win and by more than two goals. It might be their best bet, as their final game of the season is against undefeated Humber.
The Mohawk women’s situation is different. The Mountaineers downed Redeemer 1-0 at Mohawk Sports Park on an early goal by Lauren Boiago and the shutout goalkeeping of Stacy Pribeli. The 4-7 Mountaineers, making a late season charge with three wins in their last four games, will be trying to win by at least two goals at Sheridan Wednesday October 14.
The Bruins nipped the Mountaineers 2-1 at Mohawk Sports Park on September 22. Like their male counterparts, Sheridan has a game in hand on the Mountaineers, but it will be against undefeated Humber.
