Mountaineers off to strong start in women’s volleyball

Make it two-for-two for the Mohawk women’s volleyball squad.

The Mountaineers notched their second Ontario Colleges Athletic Association victory of the early season, sweeping the Sault College Cougars, 25-12, 25-5, 25-17 at Mohawk’s Fennell Gymnasium on Saturday (Oct. 31). Lauren Aquilina led the Mountaineers with 10 kills, two service aces and 10 digs.

Jenn Knowles had eight kills, one stuff block and one ace. Leah Waxman recorded five kills, one block, one ace and 16 digs.

Mohawk head coach Sean Pellow thought his team played fairly well and he was able to get everybody a little bit of playing time. “We’ve been fighting some injuries and illnesses the last couple of weeks,” said Pellow. “We’re trying to get everybody healthy and back into shape in time for next weekend.”

After a trip to Sarnia on Wednesday to face the Lambton Lions, the next home match for the Mountaineers will be Friday (Nov. 6) when the St.Clair Saints visit Mohawk for a 6 p.m. start.
