McMaster Marauder soccer player Matthew Grant is this week’s Pioneer Petroleum’s Ontario University Athletics Male Athlete of the Week for the period ending Nov. 8.
Grant (Brampton), a second-year goaltender, played 220 minutes (two complete games plus four overtime periods), facing 22 shots without allowing a single goal at the OUA men’s championship this past weekend at the University of Toronto.
In penalty kicks, the sociology major stopped an incredible six of 11 shots (54.5 percent) to earn McMaster its first OUA men’s soccer title since 1992 after 1-0 wins against the No. 10 Carleton Ravens and No. 1 Toronto Varsity Blues. Ending the regular season with a 6-7-1 record, all of McMaster’s post-season wins came via penalty kicks.
The Marauders now advance to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport men’s soccer championship.
The Female Athlete of the Week is Sarah Fiorini (Newmarket), who backstopped the York Lions women’s soccer team to a pair of shutout victories on the weekend as the No. 6 Lions won their third OUA championship in five seasons.
Fiorini was also named an OUA West first-team all-star earlier in the week.
