Hamilton’s Darryl Wheeler, kicker and punter for the Western Mustangs, is this week’s Ontario University Athletics Special Team’s football player of the week.
Wheeler had another outstanding game for the No. 5 Western Mustangs, booting four field goals and two converts for 14 points in a 26-16 win over the No. 7 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Nov. 7.
He had one booming punt over 50 yards on six attempts, averaging 34.5 yards. He also had one punt inside Laurier’s 20-yard line. Wheeler added five kickoffs for 245 yards, averaging an impressive 49 yards per kick, despite blustery conditions. He also made one special teams tackle.
His field goals from 17, 34, 34 and 31 yards accounted for 12 points in a game with a 10-point difference.
Also named Football Players of the Week were, on offence, sophomore Nathan Riva (LaSalle), Western Mustangs’ running back, and, on defence, Osie Ukwuoma (Mississauga), Queen’s Gaels’ defensive end.
