Guelph Gryphons’ fifth-year field hockey player Krissy Wishart of Hamilton was recently named to the World Cup qualifier squad for Canada. Wishart is one of six athletes representing Ontario.
Head coach Louis Mendonca selected 27 players (three of whom are goalkeepers) who will train and compete for a spot on the eventual 16-person team roster for the FIH World Cup Qualifier in 2010.
“I am thrilled Krissy has been given this remarkable opportunity,” said Gryphons’ head coach Michelle Turley.
“Five years ago, I knew making the national team was a very good possibility for her. This has been a goal of Krissy’s and is one that is definitely attainable. Not only is Krissy blessed with natural ability and speed, but she has an exceptional aptitude to read the game. She is a great player who also has the power to make teammates around her better players.”
Throughout her career at Guelph, Krissy has been an Ontario University Athletics and was a Canadian Interuniversity Sports Rookie of the Year. She is a five-time first-team All-Canadian.
The announcement for the qualifier squad comes at the end of a national training camp held in Vancouver that saw dozens of athletes showcase their skills.
The World Cup qualifiers will take place between March 20 and April 27, 2010 in Chile, Italy, and the United States. Canada will compete in the U.S.
Canada is currently ranked 19th in the world by the FIH. Part of the team’s preparation will also include a tour in early 2010 at an unidentified destination.
