Mountaineer volleyballers seek redemption against Panthers


It was not a good night Friday (Nov.27) for Mohawk’s volleyball teams, as they were both swept by Nipissing University from North Bay.

The Mohawk men lost for the first time this Ontario Colleges Athletic Association regular season, 18-25, 16-25, 23-25, to the Lakers. The Mountaineers slipped to 5-1 while Nipissing improved to 5-2. Mo Sulaiman led Mohawk with eight offensive points, while Ian Cameron, Andrew Ross and Mitchell Sawatsky each contributed seven.

In the women’s game, Mohawk fell to 6-2 losing 25-27, 16-25, 16-25, to Nipissing, which upped its record to 8-1. Rachel VanHartingsveldt and Leah Waxman each had eight points and Jenn Knowles seven.

Saturday (Nov. 28) the other team from North Bay, the Canadore Panthers, invade the Fennell Gymnasium. The Canadore women, take their 4-5 record up against Mohawk at noon. At 2 p.m., the Mountaineer men try to get back to winning ways against a Panther squad which remains winless at 0-7.
