The Mohawk men’s volleyball team had a real battle on their hands but they rallied twice and downed the Niagara Knights 3-2 in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association action at the Fennell Gymnasium on Wednesday (Dec. 2).
The Mountaineers got off to a bit of a shaky start in their final match of the first semester, dropping the first set 19-25. They bounced back in the second game 25-23, but then fell behind again, 24-26. In the fourth set, Mohawk trailed Niagara 11-7, came back and grabbed a 15-14 lead. They got it to 21-15 then held off a late Knights’ rally for a 25-22 win. It was back and forth in the fifth and deciding set before the Mountaineers won it 15-13 on an Ian Cameron smash.
It was fitting that Cameron should end the game with his 18th kill of the night. He also had four stuff blocks and one service ace. Mo Sulaiman had 11 kills and six aces and Codey Forrest played a very aggressive defensive match with 20 digs.
Mohawk goes into the break with a 7-1 record while Niagara drops to 4-4.
