Smith, Magalas start year with OUA athlete honours

The following student-athletes have been named Pioneer Petroleums Ontario University Athletics Athletes of the Week for the period ending Jan. 17, 2010.

Fifth-year guard Nick Magalas (Burlington) recorded his 1,000th career point and scored over half of Toronto’s points in an 80-61 loss against the No. 2 nationally-ranked Carleton Ravens this weekend to earn the male athlete of the week honour for the basketball Varsity Blues.

After leading the No. 10 Varsity Blues with 15 points and seven assists in a 74-65 loss on Friday against the No. 9 Ottawa Gee-Gees, Magalas tallied a game- and season- high 33 points against the defending Canadian Interuniversity Sport champion Ravens on Saturday night.

Magalas was five-of-seven from beyond the arc and eight-of-nine from the free throw line. The religion major is now ranked 11th in OUA scoring, averaging 16.1 points per game.

McMaster fifth-year point guard Taylor Smith (Hamilton) earned 20 points, six rebounds and four assists as the Marauders upset the No. 2 nationally-ranked and previously undefeated Windsor Lancers 66-50 on Saturday.

With Windsor cutting a McMaster 25-point lead to six in the fourth quarter, Smith nailed a clutch three-point bomb that all but secured the victory for McMaster.

The three-time OUA all-star leads the conference assists with 82, an average of 6.8 per game. With her four assists on Saturday afternoon, Smith increases her career assist total to 491, nine short of the 500 career assist milestone.
