Mohawk grabbed a share of third place in the West Region of Ontario Colleges Athletic Association women’s volleyball, with a 25-20, 25-18, 25-18 victory over the Oakville Sheridan Bruins at the Fennell Gymnasium on Tuesday (Feb. 2).
Jenna Gignac led the Mountaineers with 11 kills and two stuff blocks. Jenn Knowles was right behind with 10 kills and two blocks. Lauren Aquilina turned in an all around performance with five kills, four service aces and 14 digs. Leah Waxman had 13 digs.
With the win, Mohawk improved its record to 11-4 and pulled even with Niagara (11-5). Sheridan fell to 7-9.
Mohawk head coach Sean Pellow is satisfied with where the team is now, considering the rest of the league. “We’re a little behind where we wanted to be with that loss before Christmas to Niagara, but being where we were (at the break) I like where we’re at now.”
The Mountaineers unveiled a new player against Sheridan. Angela Vanden Hoven, from Monkton, Ont., doesn’t have a lot of experience, but the 6′ 1″ middle player gives the team much needed height. She saw limited action in her debut but acquitted herself well.
Next up for Mohawk is a trip to North Bay and two matches on the weekend. Saturday (Feb. 6) the Mountaineers visit Canadore College, then the following day have a very tough opponent when they meet first place Nipissing University.
