Volleyball matches bring podium results for MAC clubs


Hamilton’s Mountain Athletic Club 18-under boys finished fourth at the recent 18U Boys Bugarski Cup Premier held at McMaster University. The team’s competition was one of several involving MAC volleyball teams in Ontario.

Finishing third in pool play, the MAC 18U moved on to the quarter finals where they defeated the Storm Rage, 25-22, 25-14. In the semi finals MAC fought it out with top-seed Crush and were defeated, 25-23, 25-16.

In the Bronze medal match MAC pushed it to a three-game set, losing 25-17, 23-25 and 15-7 to Toronto West.

The MAC 18U team is coached by Steve Bonazza of St. Catharines and players include Jereme Han, St. Catharines; Patrick Strazalkowski, St. Catharines; Calvin Fast, Niagara-on-the-Lake; Alex Bright, Niagara Falls; Brennan Wilson, Ancaster; Jake Leslie, Hamilton; Dane Carlsen, Hamilton; Bart Jedrezejewski, Hamilton; Jeremy Bochenek, Hamilton; Jon Adomail, Hamilton; Ben Howe, Hamilton; Jesse Walczak, Hamilton; Steve Bonazza, St. Catharines.

At the 16U Boys Challenge Cup-Championship West held at St. Mary’s high school in Hamilton, the MAC 16U finished fourth overall. Advancing as the second seed in their pool, MAC defeated the Waterloo Tigers Black, 14-25, 25-23, 15-13, in the quarter finals and lost to the eventual tournament champions Pakmen, 25-21, 25-20, in the semifinals.

Facing the Riverside Rage in the Bronze medal match, the 16Us lost a close 25-21, 25-20, game match.

The MAC 16U team is coached by Parrish Offer of Hamilton and players include: Benjamin Tonin, Hamilton; Colin McCaughey, Hamilton; Conner Scime, Ancaster; Daniel Madarasz, Ancaster; Eric Bonnay, Stoney Creek; Joel Gignac, Hamilton; Luc Dupuis, Burlington; Mark Macfarlane, Ancaster; Pawel Jedrzejewski, Hamilton; Roberto Tarantino, Stoney Creek; Sam Eisbrenner, Waterdown; Shane DeJonge, Hamilton; Spencer Timms, Waterdown; and Zdravko Ivankovic, Oakville.

In the same tournament, the MAC 15U Boys team played up an age division, finishing seventh overall. Finishing first in their pool, MAC 15U were defeated by Interclub, 26-24, 24-26, 14-16, in the quarterfinals and the KW Predators, 25-16, 25-16.

The MAC 15U team is coached by Paul Guagliano and Mark Wu. Players include: Marcus Wu, Hamilton; Michael Susi, Ancaster; Ryan Guagliano, Hamilton; Anthony Cicchi, Hamilton; Nicholas Casuccio, Stoney Creek; Brad Albay, Hamilton; Brendan Kewin, Milton; Josh Searle, Campbellville; Michael Kowalksi, Hamilton Mountain; Marco Folino, Oakville; Onkar Bedi, Oakville; Matthew Burton, Hamilton; Calvin Bond, Beamsville.

At the 18U Boys Bugarski Cup Championship held in Bowmanville, the MAC 17U Boys team played up an age division and won the Silver medal. Advancing through pool play, MAC 17U defeated the Sudbury Staxx, 26-24, 25-21, in the semifinals. The Waterloo Tigers came out on top with a 25-13, 25-20, win over MAC 17U in the Gold medal match.

The MAC 17U team is coached by Chris Marynowicz of Hamilton, Derek Jones of Burlington, and Jeff Hargot of Stoney Creek. Players include: Jeremy Coulson, Burlington; Jordan Dewaele, Stoney Creek; Gabriel Dzelme, Burlington; Daniel Gayle, Hamilton; Daniel Groenveld, Welland; Zachary Kool, Ancaster; Derek Lahaie, Waterdown; Rafael Leite, Burlington; Eric Luangpakdy, Hamilton; Philip Marynowicz, Hamilton; Mack Nelson, Brantford; Jacob Roorda, Paris; Adrian Swist, Hamilton.

The MAC 16U Girls won Bronze at the 16U Girls Challenge Cup- Zone A held in Burlington. MAC finished first in its pool with strong serving efforts from Joanna Jedrzejewska of Hamilton and Rochelle Helmer of Oakville.

In the re-pool games, MAC 16U defeated the Halton Hurricanes Blue, 25-15, 21-25, 15-7, with strong serving from Alex Rocca of Ancaster. In the quarterfinal, MAC was upset by the Brant Tornadoes, 25-27, 27-25, 12-15.

In the Bronze medal match, MAC 16U defeated the Brock Volleyball Club, 21-25, 25-21,15-13. Jenn Vegh of Hamilton led with kills and Alyssa Mason of Hamilton led in blocks.

The MAC 16U team is coached by Meghan Boyle and Geoff Reiner of Ancaster. Other players include: Maddy Szlafarski, Kayleigh Mahony, Sarah Mclaughlin, Ancaster, Victoria Ho, Hamilton; Rochelle Helmer, Oakville.

The MAC 18U Girls won the Bronze medal at the 18U Girls Bugarski Cup – Championship West held in London.

Finishing second in their pool, MAC 18U moved onto the playoffs where they defeated Interclub, 25-16, 25-16, and the Ottawa Maverick Stampede, 25-18, 25-16 .

In the semifinals, Halton Hurricanes won 25-20, 23-25, 14-16. MAC 18U were awarded the bronze medal as Northern Chill had multiple athletes injured and the match was not played.
