Bronze medal eludes Mohawk’s women badminton duo

The Mohawk women’s doubles team of Ashley Payne and Kathleen Manson battled hard, but dropped their bronze medal match in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Badminton Championships in Windsor over the weekend. The Mountaineer team lost to Jenna Dupuis and Laura Dube of Sudbury Boreal.

Mohawk coach Tony Leite said the women had a hard fought match in their last appearance for the college.

Manson and Payne were 2-2 after opening round play on Friday. They defeated George Brown 21-14, 16-21, 23-21 and Humber 21-14, 21-16. However, they were beaten 6-21, 7-21, by Cambrian and 8-21, 21-19, 7-21 by Boreal.

Mohawk’s men’s doubles team, Chris Hong and Mohammed Nazimuddin, did not make the medal round, but the good news is they are scheduled to return to Mohawk next year.

They started the tournament 1-3 Friday, defeating Georgian 21-14, 21-15, but losing to Cambrian 18-21, 19-21; to Humber, 19-21, and 18-21; and to host St. Clair 14-21, 24-22, 16-21.
