Registration deadline for Wismer Award approaching


Nominations for the 7th Annual Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence and underway and will close on April 27. The award is given in the memory of John Wismer, who had a stellar coaching and teaching career in Hamilton, primarily at Barton Secondary School

The award is presented annually to a currently active high school coach of any sport, with the Hamilton Wentworth Catholic District School Board or the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board. Coaches, male or female, must have coached at least five years.

From the list of nominations, five finalists will be chosen and introduced at a media conference on May 18 at the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. The finalists will be featured on the wismerfoundation.org website.

Past winners include Jos Nederveen, St Mary’s Catholic High School; Brenda Nelson, Dundas Parkside; Claudio Silvestri of St Thomas More Catholic Secondary School; Gary Banting, Waterdown District High School; Antoinette Krusto, Cardinal Newman High School; and George Knill, who coached at several Hamilton schools.

Presentation of the award will be made at the Wismer Foundation Golf Tournament and Award Presentation Dinner on Tuesday, June 8.

In addition to the award for coaching excellence, the Wismer Award for Academic and Athletic Excellence is presented annually to an outstanding Barton High School graduating student/athlete planning to continue his or her education at the college or university level. This award, in its eighth year, will be presented at the Barton High School Graduation ceremony. Award details can be viewed at wismerfoundation.org.

The gold tournament and award presentation dinner will be held on June 8 at Carlisle Golf and Country Club. Individuals and companies can sponsor, play in the tournament and/or attend the evening Award Presentation Dinner. Two years ago, the event introduced the Kids Count, Sports Matter program. It provides an annual bursary to help support a sports related community initiative within the Hamilton public and Catholic school boards.
