Ball season starts with skills competition

Battlefield Cal Ripken Baseball League will host a free Aquafina Major League Baseball Pitch Hit and Run competition for all area youth.

The event is set for Saturday, May 8 with registration to begin at 10 a.m. at Collegiate Avenue School ball diamond, 49 Collegiate Ave., Stoney Creek.

Pitch, Hit & Run is the Official Skills Competition of Major League Baseball. This grassroots program is designed to provide youngsters with an opportunity to compete free of charge, in a competition that recognizes individual excellence in core baseball/softball skills.

Competitors are divided into four age divisions – 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, and 13-14 – and have the chance to move through four levels of competition, including Team Championships at Major League ballparks and the National Finals at the 2010 MLB All-Star Game.

The individual Pitching, Hitting and Running Champions, along with the All-Around Champion in each age group at the local competition will be awarded and advance to the Sectional Level of Competition (Saturday, May 22, 9 a.m., registration in Mississauga).

All participants must bring a copy of their birth certificate and fill out a registration/waiver form prior to the start of the competition. For questions concerning the competition, please contact co-ordinator Robert Barlow at 905-594-0135 or
