Marauder volleyballers get shot at National team

Three current members of the McMaster men’s volleyball team, along with one former Marauder player, have been invited to the selection camp for the 2010 Canadian National senior team.

Included among the 45 players from across Canada identified as National Team prospects, are McMaster players Jeremy Groenveld (Welland), Josh Lichty (St. Catharines), and Tyler Santoni (Kingston), as well as recent graduate Nathan Groenveld (Welland), who has been playing professionally in Qatar.

“This speaks volumes about how hard they have worked to get to this level,” beamed McMaster coach Dave Preston. “Individual accolades don’t always come in team sports, so this is testament to their training efforts.”

The two Groenveld brothers and Lichty have previously represented Canada on various age-group National teams, while Santoni will be getting his first exposure at the national level.

The National team selection camp will be held May 9-14 at the National Training Centre in Gatineau, QC.

The camp will determine a pool of up to 16 players for the Senior A team which will compete at the FIVB World Volleyball Championships in Italy, scheduled for Sept. 24 to Oct. 10. The Senior A team schedule will include competitions in Puerto Rico and Australia, as well as a Canadian tour with the Cuban National team, in preparation for the World Championships.

In addition to the Senior A team, a National B team will also be selected from the camp, with its competition schedule to be finalized.
