Thunderbirds upset Majors for first win

It took four games, but the Hamilton Thunderbirds have their first win in the Intercounty Baseball League.

Playing in London on Sunday (May 16) the T-Birds handed the Majors their first loss, 11-9, at Labatt Park. The result leaves Hamilton with a 1-3 record in the senior league.

The game took nearly four hours to play and featured five errors, eight pitching changes and 19 walks before the T-Birds finally prevailed. London trailed by as many as seven runs but rallied to make a game of it in the final innings. However, the Majors left 18 men on base and failed to cash in on numerous opportunities.

Kyle Pegg got the win in relief of starter Matt Martinow. Mike Mitro was the starter and loser for the Majors.

Brad Hagetorp, Brian Speck and Stefan Strecker combined for a five-hit shutout as the two-time defending champion Brantford Red Sox blanked the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-0 in another IBL game on Sunday.

The Red Sox are now 2-1 on the season.
