Yurincich was tireless worker for Braves’ football

The Burlington Braves have lost one of their strongest supporters.

Former player and the president of the junior football club’s alumni, John Yurincich died on Monday (June 28). Yurincich played on the Braves’ teams of 1965 and 1966, under head coach Bernie Custis.

Over the years he had been a hardworking member of the Braves alumni and for the past five years was the group’s president. Yurincich put in countless hours trying to continually build the Alumni in support of the team. He worked around the clock trying to make the Annual Golf Tournament a success and worked tirelessly on soliciting ads for the yearly game day program.

Recently he contributed his time towards the 2008 National Championship held in Burlington and played a key role in raising funds. In addition, Yurincich served as the Field Convener in charge of field set up and security. He also played a key role on the organizing committee of the clubs 50th anniversary celebrations.

There were many times one would find him lending a hand at the clubhouse, either at practices or games and mingling with the players. Most often on game day he would be found in the east end zone, by the clubhouse chatting with alumni or fans and enjoying the game.

So many evenings were spent throughout the year meeting on different issues concerning the club. In most cases the majority of the time was spent just listening to the many stories that he shared with all of us. He spoke often about his days and nights at the Coronation Sports Bar and Grill.

Along with his brother, Dave, and their father, Mike, the three were proprietors of “The Corn” as it was known, for 41 years. John would often reminisce of the many local characters and the who’s who of Burlington past, who passed through the Coronation’s doors. He was very proud of the many years he spent operating The Coronation and greeting its many customers.

Throughout the history of The Burlington Braves, the Yurincich family and “The Corn” had hosted many team banquets, meetings and special events at no expense to the Braves. The Burlington Braves Football Club and its Alumni will forever be thankful to John and his family for their contributions.

John Yurincich was the true meaning of the term “A Brave Booster.” and will be sincerely missed.

Visitation is Wednesday and Thursday at 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 on both days. A funeral mass will be held at St. Raphael’s Church Friday at 10:30 a.m.
